Vitest 4: poolOptions, maxThreads/maxForks, singleFork and coverage.all removed — use top-level maxWorkers/isolate
// before (Vitest 3)
export default defineConfig({ test: {
poolOptions: { forks: { execArgv: ['--expose-gc'], isolate: false, singleFork: true } },
coverage: { all: true, extensions: ['js', 'ts'] },
}})
// after (Vitest 4)
export default defineConfig({ test: {
execArgv: ['--expose-gc'],
isolate: false,
maxWorkers: 1,
coverage: { include: ['src/**/*.{ts,tsx}'] },
}})
// before
test('flaky', () => { /* ... */ }, { retry: 2 })
// after
test('flaky', { retry: 2 }, () => { /* ... */ })
If tests relied on module reset between files with singleFork, add a setup file that calls vi.resetModules() in beforeAll.
Symptom
A Vitest 3 config that uses poolOptions: { forks: { singleFork: true } }, maxThreads, minWorkers, coverage.all: true or coverage.extensions stops behaving as expected after upgrading to Vitest 4. Tests run in parallel again, uncovered files disappear from coverage, and the options do nothing. Tests passing options as the third argument (test(name, fn, { retry: 2 })) also break.
Cause
Vitest 4.0 (2025-10-22) removed Tinypool and rewrote pools:
poolOptionsis removed. Its options are now top-level.maxThreads/maxForksbecomemaxWorkers. The env varsVITEST_MAX_THREADS/VITEST_MAX_FORKSbecomeVITEST_MAX_WORKERS.singleThread/singleForkbecomemaxWorkers: 1, isolate: false.minWorkersis removed.vmThreads.memoryLimitbecomesvmMemoryLimit.coverage.allandcoverage.extensionsare removed. Coverage now reports only files loaded during the run unlesscoverage.includeis set.- The test-options object is no longer accepted as the third argument. A numeric timeout is still accepted there. Vitest 4 requires Node >= 20 and Vite >= 6.
Verify
npx vitest run --coverage lists the uncovered src files with 0%, and a single worker runs when maxWorkers: 1 is set.
