## Error

```text
Error: Failed to CreateArtifact: Received non-retryable error: Failed request: (409) Conflict: an artifact with this name already exists on the workflow run
```

## Symptom
After moving to `actions/upload-artifact@v4` (often via Dependabot), matrix or parallel jobs that all upload to the same `name:` fail, except the first to finish:

```
Error: Failed to CreateArtifact: Received non-retryable error: Failed request: (409) Conflict: an artifact with this name already exists on the workflow run
```

## Cause
Forced v3 to v4 upgrades hit this after v3 was shut down on 2025-01-30. In v4, artifacts are immutable (unless deleted). v3 let multiple jobs append files into one named artifact; v4 does not. Uploading to an existing name in the same run is a conflict.

## Fix
Give each upload a unique name, then gather them with a pattern:

```yaml
# matrix job
- uses: actions/upload-artifact@v4
  with:
    name: wheels-${{ matrix.os }}-${{ matrix.python }}
    path: dist/
# later job
- uses: actions/download-artifact@v4
  with:
    pattern: wheels-*
    path: dist/
    merge-multiple: true
```

Alternatives: `actions/upload-artifact/merge@v4` to combine artifacts into one, or `overwrite: true` (deletes then recreates the artifact with a new ID) when one later job should replace an earlier one. `overwrite` is not safe for parallel writers.

## Verify
The run summary lists one artifact per matrix leg; the downstream job's `dist/` contains all files.
