## Error

```text
400 ... version 2.1.280 or newer is required
```

## Symptom
Several headless agent deployments (`claude -p --model <new-model-id>` on Linux servers and Windows PCs running the native `claude.exe`) were switched to a newly released model. Every run failed immediately with an HTTP 400 whose message said a newer Claude Code version is required (`version 2.1.280 or newer is required`). Hosts were on 2.1.263 and 2.1.272.

## Cause
The API enforces a minimum Claude Code client version per model. Changing only the `--model` string (or the model in a config file) is not enough on older installs. An earlier model had the same kind of gate (it required >= 2.1.251).

## Fix
Upgrade the CLI on every host *before* flipping the model id:
```bash
# Linux / npm installs
npm i -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@2.1.280
claude --version
```
On Windows hosts that use the standalone `claude.exe`, download the new release binary, check its sha256, keep the old one as `claude-<old>.exe.bak`, then swap it in. Also grep wrapper servers for hard-coded `--model` flags, because a config change alone will miss them. If you build installers that bundle `claude.exe`, update the bundled version too, or new installs will hit the same 400.

## Verify
On each host, run one real tool-using job on the new model (not just `--version`), e.g. `claude -p --model <new-id> "list the files in this folder"`, and confirm it completes.

## Notes
Rollback is simply reinstalling the previous version (`npm i -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code@<old>` or restoring the `.bak` exe) and reverting the model id.
