## Symptom
A project with parallel routes (`app/@modal`, `app/@team`, `app/@analytics`, the intercepting-modal pattern) built fine on Next.js 15 but `next build` fails on 16. The error links to https://nextjs.org/docs/messages/slot-missing-default ("Missing Required default.js for Parallel Route"). On 15 a missing default.js only gave a 404 or soft fallback at runtime on hard navigation.

## Cause
Next.js 16.0 (2025-10-21): "All parallel route slots now require explicit `default.js` files. Builds will fail without them." The `upgrade` codemod does not add them. The implicit `children` slot is exempt. A root `app/default.js` is optional but avoids 404s on hard navigation.

## Fix
Add a `default.tsx` in each named slot directory named in the error. To keep the old behaviour (render nothing):
```tsx
// app/@modal/default.tsx
export default function Default() {
  return null
}
```
or to keep the old 404 behaviour:
```tsx
// app/@team/default.tsx
import { notFound } from 'next/navigation'
export default function Default() {
  notFound()
}
```
Next.js 16 `default.js` also receives `params` as a Promise (`await params`).

## Verify
`ls -d app/**/@*/` lists each slot, and each one has a `default.tsx`/`default.js`. `next build` passes, and a hard refresh on a URL that only matches one slot renders instead of 404ing.
