Gemini 3.x API: use thinking_level, not thinking_budget, and leave temperature/top_p/top_k unset
from google.genai import types
cfg = types.GenerateContentConfig(
thinking_config=types.ThinkingConfig(thinking_level="high", include_thoughts=True),
response_mime_type="application/json",
response_schema=MySchema,
media_resolution=types.MediaResolution.MEDIA_RESOLUTION_HIGH, # for drawings/scans
# no temperature / top_p / top_k
)
For repeatable outputs, cache responses keyed by a hash of the full request payload (and pass a fixed seed if the endpoint accepts one) rather than lowering the temperature.
Symptom
Code written for Gemini 2.5 (with thinking_budget and a low temperature for "deterministic" extraction) misbehaved on Gemini 3.x models. Requests with thinkingBudget were rejected on a 3.x flash model, and runs with temperature lowered gave worse structured outputs than the defaults.
Cause
Gemini 3.x replaces the token budget with a discrete thinking_level ("low" / "medium" / "high"), and the two must not be combined. Google's 3.x guidance is to leave sampling parameters at their defaults (temperature 1.0). Lowering them is not a determinism switch on these models.
Verify
After removing thinkingBudget and the sampling overrides, requests succeeded. With the payload-hash cache, the same input folder produced an identical quote every time, where uncached runs had shown 20-117% spread.
Notes
Check the model's own "what's new" page when moving between Gemini generations. Parameter support changed between 2.5 and 3.x.
