FastAPI 2025–2026 breaking changes: pydantic.v1 dropped (0.128), Python 3.9 dropped, 401 not 403 for missing creds

Fix
# before
from pydantic.v1 import BaseModel
from fastapi.responses import ORJSONResponse
app = FastAPI(default_response_class=ORJSONResponse)
# after
from pydantic import BaseModel # migrate models to Pydantic v2
app = FastAPI() # declare return types/response_model for fast Rust serialization

@app.get("/items/{id}")
async def get_item(id: int) -> Item: ...

Update auth tests from assert r.status_code == 403 to 401 for missing credentials (or follow the docs page "Use Old 403 Authentication Error Status Codes" to override the security classes). Use Python 3.10+. Install with pip install "fastapi[standard]" to get the CLI (fastapi dev, fastapi run) and uvicorn.

Symptom

Upgrading an older FastAPI app to a current release breaks in several ways that pre-2025 knowledge won't predict: models imported from pydantic.v1 stop working, installs on Python 3.9 resolve to an old FastAPI, auth tests asserting 403 for a missing bearer token now see 401, and ORJSONResponse/UJSONResponse emit deprecation warnings.

Cause

From the FastAPI release notes:

  • 0.122.0 (2025-11-24): "Use 401 status code in security classes when credentials are missing" (previously 403).
  • 0.125.0 (2025-12-17): drop Python 3.8; 0.127.0 (2025-12-21) added deprecation warnings for pydantic.v1; 0.128.0 (2025-12-27): "Drop support for pydantic.v1."
  • 0.129.0 (2026-02-12): "Drop support for Python 3.9."
  • 0.130.0 (2026-02-22): JSON responses serialized by Pydantic (Rust) when there's a return type / response_model; 0.131.0 deprecated ORJSONResponse and UJSONResponse.
  • 0.132.0: strict JSON Content-Type checking.

Verify

python -W error::DeprecationWarning -m pytest passes against the latest FastAPI; fastapi --version shows the expected release.
