## Error

```text
Uncached data was accessed outside of `<Suspense>`
```

## Symptom
In a project created with `create-next-app` on Next.js 16.4 or later, ordinary App Router code that worked in older tutorials fails in dev and `next build` with "Uncached data was accessed outside of `<Suspense>`" (https://nextjs.org/docs/messages/blocking-route). Typical triggers are awaiting `params`/`searchParams` in a page or layout, calling `cookies()`/`headers()`/`connection()`, or a `fetch`/DB query not marked `"use cache"`, all with no parent `<Suspense>`. Agents assume App Router pages are statically or implicitly cached the 13–15 way.

## Cause
Next.js 16.4 (2026-10-06): "all new apps created with `create-next-app` will have Cache Components enabled by default" (`cacheComponents: true`, `partialPrefetching: true`). Under Cache Components, async data is treated as per-request unless cached with `"use cache"`, and request-time work must sit under a Suspense boundary so Next.js can prerender a static shell. Next.js says this model becomes the default in Next.js 17.

## Fix
Either cache the data:
```tsx
import { cacheTag, cacheLife } from 'next/cache'
async function getRecentArticles() {
  'use cache'
  cacheTag('articles')
  cacheLife('hours')
  return db.query(...)
}
```
or stream it behind a fallback:
```tsx
import { Suspense } from 'react'
export default function Page() {
  return (
    <Suspense fallback={<TransactionSkeleton />}>
      <TransactionList />{/* awaits cookies()/db inside */}
    </Suspense>
  )
}
```
Move `cookies()`/`headers()` reads down into the component that needs them, inside the boundary. During a migration you can defer a route with `export const instant = false` on the segment that raised the error. Sync IO in the prerendered shell (`new Date()`, `Math.random()`, `crypto.randomUUID()`) still fails the build, so move it behind `await connection()` inside Suspense or into a Client Component. To opt out entirely, set `cacheComponents: false` in next.config.

## Verify
`next build` completes. If the error appears only in CI, `next build --debug-prerender` names the failing component.
