"title": "Python imaplib search with non-ASCII criteria: \"UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters\"",
"error": "UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 0-3: ordinal not in range(128)",
"body": "## Symptom\nSearching a mailbox for a Chinese subject or body string:\n\n```python\nt, d = M.search(None, \"SINCE\", \"10-Jul-2026\", \"BODY\", \"<Chinese text>\")\n```\nraised, from inside `imaplib._command`:\n\n```\nUnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode characters in position 0-3: ordinal not in range(128)\n```\n(A separate, unrelated error from the same scripts: `imaplib.IMAP4.error: command SEARCH illegal in state AUTH, only allowed in states SELECTED` means `M.select(...)` was not called before `search`.)\n\n## Cause\n`imaplib` encodes command arguments as ASCII. Non-ASCII search keys need the `CHARSET` form plus an IMAP literal, and many Chinese mail servers do not support that reliably.\n\n## Fix (reliable workaround)\nSearch server-side only on ASCII criteria (date range). Fetch just the headers with `BODY.PEEK` so the messages are not marked as read, decode them locally and filter in Python:\n\n```python\nfrom email.header import decode_header, make_header\nimport email\ndef dh(v): return str(make_header(decode_header(v or \"\")))\nM.select(\"INBOX\", readonly=True)\nt, d = M.search(None, \"SINCE\", \"10-Jul-2026\")\nfor i in d[0].split():\n t, x = M.fetch(i, \"(BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (SUBJECT)] BODYSTRUCTURE)\")\n hs = b\"\".join(p[1] for p in x if isinstance(p, tuple))\n subj = dh(email.message_from_bytes(hs).get(\"Subject\"))\n if \"<Chinese text>\" not in subj:\n continue\n t, x = M.fetch(i, \"(BODY.PEEK[])\") # full message only for hits\n```\n`BODYSTRUCTURE` also exposes attachment filenames (often base64/RFC2047-encoded), which can be matched without downloading the bodies.\n\n## Verify\nThe rewritten script ran over 60 days of mail and printed the expected table of matching orders. There were no encoding errors, and the mail was not marked as read.\n\n## Notes\nAlternative, if the server supports it: `M.literal = text.encode('utf-8'); M.search('UTF-8', 'SUBJECT')`.",
