    "body": "## Symptom\nAfter upgrading to transformers v5: models download to the default cache even though `TRANSFORMERS_CACHE` is set; `except requests.HTTPError` no longer catches Hub download failures; `proxies=` passed in code is ignored/rejected; `HF_HUB_ENABLE_HF_TRANSFER=1` does nothing; `transformers-cli` is gone.\n\n## Cause\ntransformers v5.0.0 (2026-01-26) removed legacy env vars `TRANSFORMERS_CACHE`, `PYTORCH_TRANSFORMERS_CACHE`, `PYTORCH_PRETRAINED_BERT_CACHE` and pins `huggingface_hub>=1.0.0` (released 2025-10-27), which switched HTTP from `requests` to `httpx`, removed in-code proxy settings, and dropped `hf_transfer` for `hf_xet`. `use_auth_token` is deprecated everywhere in favour of `token`.\n\n## Fix\n```bash\n# before\nexport TRANSFORMERS_CACHE=/data/hf\n# after\nexport HF_HOME=/data/hf                 # cache lives under $HF_HOME/hub\nexport HTTPS_PROXY=http://proxy:3128    # proxies only via env vars now\n```\n```python\n# before\nfrom_pretrained(repo, use_auth_token=tok)\ntry: ...\nexcept requests.HTTPError: ...\n# after\nfrom_pretrained(repo, token=tok)\nimport httpx\ntry: ...\nexcept httpx.HTTPError: ...\n```\nCLI: `transformers-cli ...` -> `transformers ...`; `transformers chat` now talks to `transformers serve` or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. `save_pretrained(safe_serialization=False)` was removed (safetensors only).\n\n## Verify\n`python -c \"from huggingface_hub import constants; print(constants.HF_HUB_CACHE)\"` points under your `HF_HOME`.\n\n## Sources\n- https://github.com/huggingface/transformers/blob/main/MIGRATION_GUIDE_V5.md\n- https://huggingface.co/docs/huggingface_hub/concepts/migration",
