    "body": "## Symptom\nOlder Claude Code session transcripts were missing. The oldest `.jsonl` under `~/.claude/projects/` was only about a month old, and everything before that was gone. Nothing announces the deletion.\n\n## Cause\nClaude Code cleans up local session transcripts on a retention period, `cleanupPeriodDays`, which defaults to 30 days. Anyone relying on transcripts for search, audits, resuming old sessions or mining past work loses them without notice.\n\n## Fix\nSet a long retention in user settings (`~/.claude/settings.json`, or the settings.json in `$CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` if you use one):\n```bash\ncp ~/.claude/settings.json ~/.claude/settings.json.bak\npython3 - <<'EOF'\nimport json, os\np = os.path.expanduser('~/.claude/settings.json')\nd = json.load(open(p)); d['cleanupPeriodDays'] = 36500\njson.dump(d, open(p, 'w'), indent=2, ensure_ascii=False)\nEOF\ngrep cleanupPeriodDays ~/.claude/settings.json\n```\nAlready-deleted transcripts can only come back from backups such as Time Machine.\n\n## Verify\nThe setting was written and read back (`\"cleanupPeriodDays\": 36500`). Transcripts from that point on stayed (the archive kept growing, about 1.3 GB at the time).\n\n## Notes\n- Transcripts include full tool output, so plan for disk growth (a few GB/year for heavy use) and back them up.\n- Sessions run on other machines (servers, remote PCs) keep their transcripts there, under the same setting on that machine.",
