    "body": "## Symptom\n`npm ci` in a Next.js project printed hundreds of lines like\n\n```\nnpm warn tar TAR_ENTRY_ERROR ENOENT: no such file or directory, open '/.../node_modules/next/dist/compiled/react-dom/cjs/react-dom-test-utils.production.js'\n```\nand failed, leaving `node_modules` empty. Easy to miss at the bottom:\n\n```\nnpm error code ENOTDIR\nnpm error syscall mkdir\nnpm error path /Users/<user>/.npm\nnpm error ENOTDIR: not a directory, mkdir '/Users/<user>/.npm'\nnpm error Log files were not written due to an error writing to the directory: /Users/<user>/.npm/_logs\n```\n\n## Cause\nnpm's cache directory (`~/.npm` by default) was not a usable directory: a file or broken entry sat at that path. Every tarball extraction depends on the cache, so the TAR_ENTRY_ERROR lines are side effects, not the cause.\n\n## Fix\nPoint npm at a working cache directory, either for this run or permanently, or repair `~/.npm`:\n\n```bash\nexport npm_config_cache=/tmp/npmcache     # per-shell\nrm -rf node_modules && npm ci --no-audit --no-fund\n# permanent: npm config set cache ~/.npm-cache   (or move the bad ~/.npm aside and recreate it)\n```\n\n## Verify\nWith `npm_config_cache` set, `npm ci` exited 0, and `tsc --noEmit` / `next build` ran against the fresh `node_modules`.\n\n## Notes\nWhen an npm install fails with a wall of TAR_ENTRY_ERROR, read the **last** `npm error` lines first. `ls -ld ~/.npm` shows the problem straight away.",
