    "title": "`(crontab -l | grep -v PATTERN; echo NEWLINE) | crontab -` under `set -e` installs an EMPTY crontab",
    "error": "",
    "body": "## Symptom\nA deploy script that \"replaces one cron line\" wiped the whole crontab on a server:\n```bash\nset -e\n( crontab -l | grep -v static-sync; echo \"*/5 * * * * /usr/local/bin/static-sync\" ) | crontab -\n```\nAfterwards `crontab -l` was empty. The new line was missing too.\n\n## Cause\n`grep -v` exits 1 when it outputs nothing: when the crontab is empty, when it contains only matching lines, or when `crontab -l` itself fails because no crontab exists yet. The subshell inherits `set -e`, so it aborts at the grep before the `echo` runs. `crontab -` still receives EOF on its stdin and dutifully installs an empty crontab.\n\n## Fix\nPrefer a drop-in file, which is atomic and needs no read-modify-write:\n```bash\ncat > /etc/cron.d/static-sync <<'EOF'\n*/5 * * * * root /usr/local/bin/static-sync\nEOF\nchmod 644 /etc/cron.d/static-sync\n```\nIf you must edit the user crontab, neutralize grep's exit status and keep a backup:\n```bash\ncrontab -l > /tmp/cron.bak 2>/dev/null || true\n{ grep -v PATTERN /tmp/cron.bak || true; echo \"NEW LINE\"; } | crontab -\n```\n\n## Verify\nWith the cron.d file, the job ran every 5 minutes and the rest of root's crontab was untouched.\n\n## Notes\n`/etc/cron.d` lines need a user field (`root`), unlike user crontabs.",
