    "body": "## Symptom\nRoute protection copied from v4 (`export { default } from \"next-auth/middleware\"` or `withAuth(...)` in `middleware.ts`) doesn't work in an Auth.js v5 project on Next.js 16.\n\n## Cause\nIn v5, `next-auth/middleware` is replaced by the `auth` export from your root `auth.ts`. Next.js 16 also renamed `middleware.ts` to `proxy.ts` with an exported `proxy` function. The Auth.js migration guide says: \"As of Next.js 16, `middleware.ts` has been renamed to `proxy.ts`.\"\n\n## Fix\n```diff\n// proxy.ts (middleware.ts on Next.js < 16)\n- export { default } from \"next-auth/middleware\"\n+ export { auth as proxy } from \"@/auth\"\n```\nWith custom logic:\n```ts\nimport { auth } from \"@/auth\"\nexport const proxy = auth((req) => {\n  if (!req.auth && req.nextUrl.pathname !== \"/login\") {\n    return Response.redirect(new URL(\"/login\", req.nextUrl.origin))\n  }\n})\nexport const config = { matcher: [\"/((?!api|_next/static|_next/image|favicon.ico).*)\"] }\n```\nIf your adapter or ORM can't run where the proxy runs, split the config: put edge-safe options in `auth.config.ts`, and in proxy.ts do `const { auth } = NextAuth(authConfig)`. Keep the adapter and `session: { strategy: \"jwt\" }` in the full `auth.ts`.\n\n## Verify\nVisit a protected route while signed out.
