    "body": "## Symptom\nA fresh install or sdist build that worked before February 2026 now fails with `ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pkg_resources'`, either at runtime (vcstool, dropbox 11.x, older google-api-python-client, TensorBoard) or while building from source (`setup.py` doing `from pkg_resources import parse_version`, openai/CLIP, editdistpy < 0.2.0). Also common in uv-created venvs, which don't preinstall setuptools at all.\n\n## Cause\nsetuptools v82.0.0 (2026-02-08): \"pkg_resources has been removed from Setuptools. Most common uses of pkg_resources have been superseded by the importlib.resources and importlib.metadata projects.\" Unbounded `setuptools` in `[build-system].requires` now resolves to 82+.\n\n## Fix\nPort the code (long-term):\n```python\n# before\nfrom pkg_resources import parse_version, get_distribution, resource_filename, iter_entry_points\nv = get_distribution(\"requests\").version\npath = resource_filename(\"mypkg\", \"data/x.json\")\nfor ep in iter_entry_points(\"mypkg.plugins\"): ep.load()\n\n# after\nfrom packaging.version import parse as parse_version      # add `packaging` to deps/build-system.requires\nfrom importlib.metadata import version, entry_points\nfrom importlib.resources import files\nv = version(\"requests\")\npath = files(\"mypkg\") / \"data/x.json\"\nfor ep in entry_points(group=\"mypkg.plugins\"): ep.load()\n```\nFor a third-party package, upgrade it first.
