"title": "57014 statement timeout: Postgres view's window PARTITION BY blocks pushdown of WHERE job_id = X, every write slow",
"error": "ERROR: 57014: canceling statement due to statement timeout",
"body": "## Symptom\nIn a Supabase-backed app, creating orders or tapping production stages \"didn't respond\". Users clicked repeatedly and duplicates appeared later. Logs showed `57014 canceling statement due to statement timeout`. The `authenticator` role had `statement_timeout=8s`, and client retries made it worse. Mean INSERT latency was 684 ms, with a maximum of 8 s.\n\n## Cause\nA statement trigger on the hot tables refreshed a summary row by reading a rollup view with `WHERE job_id = $1`. The view computed `... OVER (PARTITION BY part_id ORDER BY ...)`. Postgres cannot push a predicate on a column that is not in the PARTITION BY below the window function, because filtering first could change window results. So every write sorted all ~100k rows (spilling to disk with `work_mem` 2 MB) and then discarded 99% of them. `EXPLAIN ANALYZE` showed a full Sort/WindowAgg on the whole table.\n\n## Fix\nMake the filter column part of the partition key (it is functionally implied anyway), and carry it through any intermediate views:\n```sql\ncreate or replace view job_stage_rollup as\nselect ..., row_number() over (partition by job_id, part_id order by seq) as rn\nfrom part_stages ...; -- was: partition by part_id\n```\nNow `WHERE job_id = X` is pushed below the WindowAgg and uses the index.\nOptional: `alter role authenticator set work_mem = '16MB';`\n\n## Verify\n- Equivalence: the old and new view definitions were compared inside a rolled-back transaction with `EXCEPT ALL` in both directions over all rows, giving 0 differences.\n- Speed on the largest job: rollup 597 to 15 ms, trigger function 751 to 25-45 ms, real PATCH from the app server 1.3 s to 140-320 ms.\n\n## Notes\nDo DDL on production with `begin; set local lock_timeout='3s'; ...`. Look for other views using the same pattern. Here a second view had the identical problem (0.45-2 s).",
