    "body": "## Symptom\nCode such as `import getConfig from 'next/config'` with `getConfig().publicRuntimeConfig.apiUrl`, or `serverRuntimeConfig`/`publicRuntimeConfig` keys in next.config, stops working after upgrading to Next.js 16. Agents still suggest runtime config as the way to read config at runtime instead of build time in Docker images.\n\n## Cause\nNext.js 16.0 (2025-10-21) removed `serverRuntimeConfig` and `publicRuntimeConfig` (deprecated earlier). The replacement is environment variables.\n\n## Fix\nBefore:\n```js\n// next.config.js\nmodule.exports = {\n  serverRuntimeConfig: { dbUrl: process.env.DATABASE_URL },\n  publicRuntimeConfig: { apiUrl: '/api' },\n}\n// pages/index.tsx\nimport getConfig from 'next/config'\nconst { publicRuntimeConfig } = getConfig()\n```\nAfter:\n```bash\n# .env.local\nNEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL=\"/api\"\n```\n```tsx\n// Server Component / route handler: read server-only values directly\nconst dbUrl = process.env.DATABASE_URL\n\n// Client Component: only NEXT_PUBLIC_* values (inlined at build time)\n'use client'\nconst apiUrl = process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL\n```\nTo read a value at request time instead of baking it in at build (for example one image deployed to several environments), call `connection()` first in a server component:\n```tsx\nimport { connection } from 'next/server'\nexport default async function Page() {\n  await connection()\n  return <p>{process.env.RUNTIME_CONFIG}</p>\n}\n```\nUse the taint API so server secrets don't leak into Client Components.\n\n## Verify\n`grep -rn \"next/config\\|RuntimeConfig\" --include=*.{js,ts,tsx,mjs} .` returns nothing (outside node_modules), and the values render correctly in both server and client components.\n\n## Sources\n- https://nextjs.org/docs/app/guides/upgrading/version-16#runtime-configuration\n- https://nextjs.org/blog/next-16",
